History

Densetsu no Starfy

In Densetsu no Starfy, Herman is first seen in Lobber's Cave wearing an ordinary gray shell. Herman asks Starfy to find his missing home (his conch shell - the Pretty Shell). After finding a Kettle, Herman, believing it may have been washed further, gives Starfy a key leading to another part of the level, where Starfy finds a tusk shell - the Dentalium Shell. After finding the tusk shell, Herman - who finds the shell too small - thinks that it is behind the rocks. He then teaches Starfy how to use the Star Spin attack. Later, Starfy finds the colorful conch shell and returns it to Herman. Herman is very grateful for Starfy and leads Starfy to the next stage, Coral Reef. Apparently, Herman later throws away his ordinary shell, Kettle, and the Dentalium Shell, which end up blocking a tunnel in the Coral Reef stage.

In Densetsu no Starfy 2

Herman is found in the second stage of Lobber's Cave, where he tells Starfy and Moe that an "Ogura lookalike" was causing trouble in the area. Moe asks Herman to teach Starfy the Star Spin again, which he obliges. Herman then asks Starfy to defeat 40 Kurobon, after which he lets Starfy through to where he finds Sailor's Uniform.

In Densetsu no Starfy 3

Starfy, Starly, and Moe meet up with Herman in Lobber's Cave, with Moe saying that Starfy needs to once again learn the Star Spin. Herman arrogantly agrees, saying "who'd teach you the Star Spin if I wasn't here?". To the shock of everyone, Starly chimes in that she knows the Star Spin, learning it by copying her brother, whom she says she'll teach it to him later. Herman starts talking to himself, panicked, saying that there's no point in him being here if Starly can just teach Starfy the technique. Getting an idea, he runs off and "loses" his shell, asking Starfy to get it for him. When Starly offers, Herman refuses, as she might bring back the wrong shell. He emphasizes that after HE teaches Starfy the Star Spin, he can go get his shell. After finding the Pretty Shell and returning it to Herman, he gives them the Spiral Shell Hat and opens the door that Ogura went through, but not before getting in a passive-aggressive jab at Starly.

In Densetsu no Starfy 4

Starfy, Starly, and Moe meet Herman in Lobber's Villa, where he asks them for a favor. Moe asks if it's about his shell, which Herman says that it's not about his normal shell, but his "Outing Shell" that was inside a bag of his, stolen by Fork. After beating Fork and bringing Herman's Shell back to him, Herman puts on a gaudy, golden shell, to the surprise of Starfy and Starly. For helping him, Herman gives the group the Herman Hat.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Herman ("Yadokarita") appears as a collectable sticker in the Nintendo fighting game Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii.

The Legendary Starfy

In The Legendary Starfy, Herman first appears in Gluglug Lagoon (Stage 1-2: 'Star Spin') where he asks for Starfy's help in saving his 10 of his Coddies who have been swallowed alive by a Goblup. Herman tagged the Goblup with a tracker, so that Starfy can easily find it. By using his Star Spin attack, Starfy manages to free all of the Coddies and return them to a grateful Herman safely. Herman then tells Starfy the whereabouts of Big Squiddy and Bunston.

Side Quest No. 1: Herman's 5 Red Pearls

Herman appears again in the "Herman's 5 Red Pearls" Side Quest found in Stage 1-2. This is the first Side Quest found in the game. In this Side Quest, Herman has lost 5 precious Red Pearls and Starfy must help Herman to find the Pearls to buy 'high-class fishie food' for his Coddies. Finding the 5 Red Pearls grants Starfy access to Area Secret 1.

Side Quest No. 2: Race with Fork

Herman also appears in the "Race with Fork" Side Quest found in Stage 1-3: 'Mysterious Powers'. In Race with Fork, Herman asks Starfy to challenge Fork and beat him in a race. Winning the race has Fork grant the player access to Area Secret 2.

Trivia

  • The journal entries for Side Quests No. 17 "Juggle This" and No. 18 "Gliding By" in The Legendary Starfy refer to Herman and have descriptions "Looks like Herman can't get enough juggling! Can you beat his record?" and "Use your Glide ability to beat Herman's jumping record" respectively, even though Herbert was the one who set these Side Quests and not Herman.
    • The game never implies in the actual Side Quests themselves that the player has to beat Herman's records or set these records from the requests of Herman rather than Herbert, so this might be an oversight from the game developers.
