Choan is an anglerfish that appears in Densetsu no Starfy 3 who wears a miner's helmet with a light dangling from it in place of a lure. He lets Starfy and Starly use the Submarine.

In Densetsu no Starfy 3

Investigating the source of the earthquakes in the Gabun Ocean Trench, Starfy, Starly, and Moe enter a room that's dark and has no Lampyres in it. Thinking they're stuck, Choan lights up the room and asks who the trio are. After Moe introduces himself as "the hero chasing after the villain named Ogura" and Starfy and Starly as his "useless sidekicks", Starly stops him and properly introduces herself and her brother. After explaining that they need to get past in order to continue chasing after Ogura, Choan says that it's dangerous while Gabun is thrashing about (due to someone making him have a stomachache). But he says that if they need to keep going, they'll need a submarine to do so. After learning how to use said submarine, Choan congratulates Starfy and gives him the Miner's Helmet Stuff Item after wishing him luck in stopping Gabun.

Post Game

During Starfy 3's post game, if the player goes back to 7-1, Choan lets Starfy or Starly know that the submarine's been upgraded. After saying yes to his invitation to try it out and completing Choan's training, Starfy/Starly is given the Submarine upgrade. If they talk to Choan afterwards, he asks how using the upgraded submarine feels to use.

Name Origin

  • Choan's name may come from Chouchinankou (ちょうちんあんこう/提灯鮟鱇, Himantolophus or the Footballfish, a family of anglerfish). If this is the case, then Choan actually shares a name origin with the Pokémon Chinchou.

Trivia

  • Choan uses the personal pronoun Oira in Japanese.
  • Choan's mannerisms and speech patterns closely match those of Komasan and Komajiro's from the Yo-Kai Watch franchise. All three of them use ズラ (Zura), indicative of country bumpkin characters, and both Choan and Komasan use the pronoun "Oira" (オイラ).
