Official artwork of Starfy using his Star Spin attack from The Legendary Starfy

The Star Spin (Spin Attack, スピンアタック in Japan) is Starfy and Starly's main attack. It is performed by pressing the Y button in The Legendary Starfy, or the B button in the Game Boy Advance games and Densetsu no Starfy 4. Starfy or Starly can spin around to attack enemies or break barriers. If they spin too much, though, they will get dizzy. They cannot move for a few seconds by that. If the player moves the control pad around, their dizziness time will shorten. Starfy's Star Spin can be upgraded to Mighty Star Spin then Ultra Star Spin later in the games.

Varieties

Normal Star Spin

The starting Star Spin. In Densetsu no Starfy, this ability is first taught to Starfy by Herman in Lobber's Cave. This Star Spin can break blocks without being bumped, but Starfy/Starly move slower while using it. It is used on land even after Starfy upgrades to Mighty Star Spin and Ultra Star Spin. Starfy can also still use it in water if he spins without moving.

Description from The Legendary Starfy

"Use your Star Spin to attack bad guys or break barriers. Just don't get too dizzy!"

Mighty Star Spin

Known as Spin Attack level 2 in Japan. In the Game Boy Advance games, Chuta always taught it to Starfy. It can get through fast currents and Starfy moves faster while using it, but breaking blocks also bumps Starfy so it takes longer to break a row of blocks than it does for even the normal Star Spin. Starly never gets to use the Mighty Star Spin. Shakejii teaches it in Densetsu no Starfy 4.

Description from The Legendary Starfy

"Use this move just under the surface to pop out and leap into the sky!"

Ultra Star Spin

Known as Spin Attack level 3 in Japan. Starfy moves fast and doesn't get bumped by breaking blocks while using it. It is taught to him by Gekojii in Densetsu no Starfy and Densetsu no Starfy 3. Gekyojii teaches it in Densetsu no Starfy 2. Jojiro teaches it in Thousand Year Hill (7-3) in Densetsu no Starfy 4. Herbert teaches it in Skydye Heights (6-3) in The Legendary Starfy, who mistakes Starfy for a lookalike. Starly never gets to use it.

Description from The Legendary Starfy

"It's an even stronger Star Spin! This one will spin you farther too."
