Signboards (Japanese: カンバン) are objects that appear in all games in the The Legendary Starfy series and interactive objects in all games except The Legendary Starfy.
In the first four games, they teach the player about a recently learned Ability or recently acquired Vehicle. For Abilities and Vehicles that are not upgraded, they usually disappear after the Area one appears in is complete. Signboards for upgraded vehicles do not disappear and can be found again after the Area is beaten for a second time.
In the Game Boy Advance games, they are wooden and have a square board where the message is, while in Densetsu no Starfy 4 the board is rounder and the signboard appears to be made of metal.
In Densetsu no Starfy, being near a signboard makes a text box appear below that shows the controls and what ability performing those controls will do.
In Densetsu no Starfy 2, Densetsu no Starfy 3 and Densetsu no Starfy 4, the player can press the up button on the D-pad (or the X button in Densetsu no Starfy 4) to bring up a screen that explains the controls for an ability with an accompanying animation. The animation can be slowed down using the L or R buttons.
In The Legendary Starfy, signboards serve a different purpose and point towards the goal with a red arrow on them. In this game, signboards do not disappear after the area they appear in is cleared. Like in the Game Boy Advance games, they are wooden but unlike other games the color of the board is a dark brown.
