Piranyan is an enemy, based on a piranha, also slightly resembling a pufferfish, that appears in both Densetsu no Starfy 2 and Densetsu no Starfy 3. In Densetsu no Starfy 2, it appears in most levels of the Pitch Dark Cave in underwater areas, while it is found in the water of the Jungle in Densetsu no Starfy 3.
Method of attack
Piranyans home in on Starfy when he swims past, and are so fast, they can even compete with Starfy's fastest swimming speed. If Starfy has to stop to break blocks, it is very likely that a Piranyan can use this time to catch up. Piranyans are covered in spikes, so mere contact with one, even if Starfy is attacking with the Star Spin, will cause Starfy to lose a heart of health.
Strategy
As the Piranyans are invincible, the player can only focus on avoiding them, rather than defeating them. In some areas, there will be a crate near a school of Piranyans, containing meat. If Starfy can get the meat to fall near the Piranyans, they will chase after the food and leave Starfy alone, allowing him to bypass them without threat.
