Woopal seems to be based on axolotl, a species of neotenic salamander which remain aquatic and gilled, keeping flat tails.
Trivia
Name origin
- Possibly a truncation of wooper looper (ウーパールーパー, Ūpā Rūpā), a marketing term in Japan and other countries for axolotl. The name of the Pokémon Wooper (Japanese: ウパー Upah) is a notable play on "wooper looper".
