This article lists unused content that can be found in Densetsu no Starfy 2.

Development text

Densetsu no Starfy 2 has various development text that can be viewed from the ROM in ANSI encoding. [1]

Compile date

The string "OptRls.2003/08/04 20:24:28" can be found in the ROM at offset 0x14DEB0. It is presumably a date from when the game was compiled. OptRls probably stands for "Optimum Release". Similar messages can be found in Densetsu no Starfy 3 and the game Shrek: Hassle at the Castle (which is believed to have been developed by TOSE).[2]

Version number

At offset 0x14DF90, the string "Stafy2 VER 007" is listed twice, with the second string immediately following the first after a space and a null character. It is unclear whether this refers to the latest version of Densetsu no Starfy 2 or an earlier version.

File Select unused content

Densetsu no Starfy 2 has some unused content that is stored with the File Select tiles. All the content here is shared with Densetsu no Starfy 3, although the tiles are designed differently between the versions.

14 Stage numbers

12-14

Tiles exist for stage numbers 12-14, perhaps suggesting that 14 stages in the game were once planned instead of 11. Densetsu no Starfy 3 also has tiles that range from 1-14 (there are 10 stages in Densetsu no Starfy 3).

Frame

The frame

There is an unused red frame with yellow borders that has an illustration of Starfy in it. The purpose of the frame is unclear.

Unused music

Unknown music appears as a file in the game's sound data. It is never used in game. It may not be valid music, although there do seem to be patterns in how the pitch changes. Additionally it could be an elongated or incorrectly ripped version of the sound effect from Densetsu no Starfy for when Starfy knocks over the treasure in the first ending.

The unused music

Unused pearl

The single Pearl in the room where Ogura in his invincible state used to be

If the player changes memory address 03007D55h in Stage 11-6 (Ogura Castle) to 02h, they can re-enter the room where Ogura in his invincible state fights Starfy but with Ogura missing and a single Pearl near his place.

Unused stuff item

In the area of the ROM holding the names for stuff, there is an unused entry directly following Chun Hat and directly preceding Party Mask (which is notably normally not the next selectable item in the Stuff Selection Screen), reading "欠番" (literally "missing number"). It also has its own description entry, also reading '欠番', and like the item name, the description directly follows on from the Chun Hat description and directly precedes the Party Mask description. These strings are technically valid entries, as they are terminated by ":end" control characters.

It is relevant that during the development of Densetsu no Starfy 2, around 250 draft designs for Stuff were made, but of these designs only 99 types were used in the final game, so it is possible that this item was for a design that was never used. [3]

Unused symbols

The font used for the Area number in Densetsu no Starfy 2 contains the full English alphabet in both upper case and lower case as well as some other symbols that are also never used, including ゐ (wi), ゑ (we), mathematical symbols and some other symbols. They can be seen by modifying memory address 0x02001283. The English alphabet values range from 0x60-0x79 for uppercase characters and 0x81-0x8A for lowercase characters.
