The E3 logo

The Electronic Entertainment Expo, commonly known as E3 is an annual fair trade for video games presented by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA). Many video game publishers show off their upcoming video games and game-related merchandise at E3. It is commonly held each year at the Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC) in Los Angeles.

E3 2009

E3 2009 was the 15th Electronic Entertainment Expo held. It took place at the Los Angeles Convention Center from June 2nd-June 4th. The Legendary Starfy was one of the games that was shown at E3 2009 on June 2, along with games such as New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box.[1]

E3 2011

E3 2011 was the 17th Electronic Entertainment Expo held, which took place at the Los Angeles Convention Center from June 7th-June 9th. During the event, the Wii U was officially revealed. Additionally, a fourth entry in the Super Smash Bros. series (which became Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U) was hinted at in passing by Satoru Iwata, but development on the game had actually began later, after the release of Kid Icarus Uprising.

E3 2013

E3 2013 was the 19th Electronic Entertainment Expo held, from June 11th-June 13th. Unlike in the past, Nintendo did not hold a press conference for the event (where journalists come together to see Nintendo release news in a non-digital event), but rather they held a digital event that could be viewed via a Nintendo Direct that aired on June 11, 2013. There was also a Pokémon X and Y developer roundtable that developers and journalists attended, where photography or videoing was prohibited.

The first footage of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U was shown at the Nintendo Direct, revealing the newcomer Mega Man. After the trailer, the official website for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U website was set up and the newcomer Wii Fit Trainer was revealed.

E3 2014

E3 2014 was the 20th Electronic Entertainment held, from June 10th to June 12th 2014. For the second year running, Nintendo did not hold a press conference but they rather spread their news digitally, through something called the "Nintendo Digital Event". According to Reggie Fils-Aime; the president and chief operating officer of Nintendo of America, no press conference was held because "more and more people are looking to tune in to an event". He also explains that it may be more difficult for Japanese speaking developers to explain their products through a press conference rather than a digital event.

The Nintendo Digital Event is available on the official E3 website and through videos on Nintendo's official Youtube channel. Games such as Zelda Wii U, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Mario Maker and Splatoon were shown.

After the Nintendo Digital Event, Nintendo Treehouse showed more gameplay footage from previously shown games, revealed more details about these games, interviewed the developers, and showed new games not shown in the Digital Event, including Star Fox (Wii U), Mario Party 10 and Code Name S.T.E.A.M.

A developer roundtable was held for Code Name S.T.E.A.M, where the game was shown for the first time and questions were asked by journalists to the developers.

Super Smash Bros. Wii U demos

In late April 2014, it was announced that a Super Smash Bros. for Wii U tournament called the Super Smash Bros. Invitational would be held at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, California. A demo version of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U was used, with only 20 available characters.

The participants included 16 "highly skilled" Smash Bros. players and three commentators. There were many spectators at the event.

After the E3 Digital Event, more Super Smash Bros. for Wii U gameplay was shown by Nintendo Treehouse. It was also announced that a demo version of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U called Nintendo Smash Fest would be available at certain Best Buy stores for the remainder of the week, [2]

Within these demos, more information about Super Smash Bros. for Wii U was revealed that was not known before. The demo gameplay confirmed Starfy as an Assist Trophy (though Starfy was seen via a picture of the day and two press package screenshots before) and confirmed that Starfy would act the same way as in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, except with his signature Confrontation with the Boss melody removed.
