Super Mario Maker (Japanese: スーパーマリオメーカー) is video game software for the Wii U. It was released on September 10, 2015 in Japan, September 11, 2015 in North America and Europe, and September 12, 2015 in Australia.

Super Mario Maker allows players to create their own courses from the Super Mario franchise based on the original Super Mario Bros. and games Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, New Super Mario Bros. U.

Nintendo 3DS version

In December 2016, Super Mario Maker was also released for Nintendo 3DS. However, this version in addition to removing the ability to upload courses online (replaced with StreetPass and Local Play functionality for sharing courses) removed the Mystery Mushroom power-up and Costume Mario. This means that the Starfy Costume Mario does not appear in the Nintendo 3DS version. Furthermore Event Courses are unavailable in the Nintendo 3DS version, which means it is impossible to play the "Starfy, Prince of Pufftop Palace" Event Course.

Gameplay (Wii U version)

In the course editor, players can add objects and enemies by selecting them from a panel and dragging them on to the course using the Wii U GamePad's touch screen.

Some objects can be added to elements that were already placed. For example, wings can be added to Goombas. Shaking an object may transform the object into a different type. Certain objects differ depending on course style, for example Dry Bones are Fish Bones underwater. Boos can be transformed into Stretch by dragging them into platforms. Not all course elements are available at first, but new elements become available through time and usage.

Objects and enemies which were previously unseen in the Super Mario series can be added to courses, such as Thwomps in the original Super Mario Bros., Piranha Plants in Lakitu Clouds, and Chain Chomps in Koopa Clown Cars. Super Mario Maker also introduces unique items including the Mystery Mushroom, Weird Mushroom and Big Mushroom.

The Mystery Mushroom is a special power-up which allows Mario to assume the role of another character as "Costume Mario" complete with sound effects specific to that character including sound effects for losing a life and clearing a course. Additionally, the character may have special animation frames.

Relevance to The Legendary Starfy series

After the release of Densetsu no Starfy 2 for Wii U Virtual Console, Nintendo published a promotional Event Course for Starfy internationally, known as "Starfy: Prince of Pufftop" (Europe), "Starfy, Prince of Pufftop Palace", "テンカイの王子スタフィー" (Japan). It was released on April 1st 2016 in Japan[1] and the evening of March 31st 2016 overseas.[2]

The course features a Mystery Mushroom which causes Mario to assume the role of Starfy.

As Starfy, Mario can perform versions of Starfy's Dash, Duck, Swim, and Jump abilities. When he falls down a pit, the melody originally used in The Legendary Starfy series for losing all health will play. When he clears the course, the first part of Densetsu no Starfy's Stage Clear melody will play.

The swimming Goombas that can be found underwater are similar to the aquatic enemies Starfy and Starly face in The Legendary Starfy series, such as Unu.
