Nintendo is a multinational company that publishes games in The Legendary Starfy series. Nintendo have co-developed games in the series with TOSE and share half of the copyright to the series. The inspiration for The Legendary Starfy series came from a collaboration with Nintendo producer Hitoshi Yamagami and TOSE producer Yasuhiro Minamimoto who both wanted to create a 'floaty platformer'. This spawned a prototype balloon-lifting game until plans were changed and the main character was decided as a starfish in a prototype of Densetsu no Starfy for the Game Boy. This character eventually became Starfy.
Nintendo of Japan and Shogakukan have also officially produced a manga for The Legendary Starfy franchise and a manga series based on Densetsu no Starfy 4, known as Densetsu no Starfy R. They have promoted various merchandise for the series including pencils, playing cards and plush toys.
