Nintendo is a multinational company that publishes games in The Legendary Starfy series. Nintendo have co-developed games in the series with TOSE and share half of the copyright to the series. The inspiration for The Legendary Starfy series came from a collaboration with Nintendo producer Hitoshi Yamagami and TOSE producer Yasuhiro Minamimoto who both wanted to create a 'floaty platformer'. This spawned a prototype balloon-lifting game until plans were changed and the main character was decided as a starfish in a prototype of Densetsu no Starfy for the Game Boy. This character eventually became Starfy.
Nintendo of Japan and Shogakukan have also officially produced a manga for The Legendary Starfy franchise and a follow-up series known as Densetsu no Starfy R, based on the events of Densetsu no Starfy 4. They have promoted various merchandise for the series including pencils, playing cards and plush toys.
