I'm pretty sure Dejiru is actually based more on a white snake, rather than an eel. A direct translation of ジール, jīru is zeal. While the story of Densetsu no Starfy 4 doesn't quite match up with the legend, and maybe it wasn't really worth mentioning, there are some similarities with it, namely the way that Starfy falls in love with Mattel, although Mattel isn't revealed to be Dejiru.
